Kava Kava is one of the most important ceremonial plants for Polynesians and other island cultures. It is known to induce a very peaceful high. Piper Methysticum, kava kava, has been carried by canoe and cultivated throughout Hawaii and many other pacific islands. Here in Kauai, ancient patches are still growing in the mountains. In recent years Kava has become very popular in the West, as it was shown to be highly effective for relaxation, de-stress, calming, and lifting ones spirit. A Kava-Kava beverage is prepared by mixing the dry ground root with water or milk. Click here to read a kava brew recipe.

In 1991, a German scientific journal, Arzneim-Forsch, reported a double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 58 patients whose anxiety was not caused by psychiatric disorders, for whom kava extract significantly reduced depression and anxiety. Although it is now well established that kava reduces anxiety and has a calming effect, when taken at recommended dosages, it does not interfere with coordination or concentration.

We grow Kava on our farm (see left), but our plants are not yet ready for harvest. Until we can provide our own Hawaiian Kava (Awa), we supply Kava root powder (waka) from Fiji.
The kavalactone content of our kava is 12 %. There is Kava on the market with as low as 6 % kavalactone, or even less. Medicinal companies buy only Kava with more then 10 % kavalactone content. Before you buy Kava-Kava from anyone make sure to find out the kavalactone content, this will greatly determine effectiveness

Kava: Nature's Answer to Stress, Anxiety, and Insomnia
Written by nationally known psychiatrist Hyla Cass, Kava: Nature's Answer to Stress, Anxiety, and Insomnia answers the many questions anxiety sufferers are asking about available treatments. With conclusive documentation of kava's effectiveness and a detailed account of scientific evidence, this balanced, comprehensive book promises to be the definitive guide to the year's newest herbal discovery. Cass clearly explains kava-kava's chemical composition without delving into turgid scientific mumbo jumbo, or relying on lifeless quotes from scientific papers. She also thoroughly covers the herb's various forms--tinctures, tablets, pastes, powdered extract, and sprays--and suggests appropriate dosages for various treatments (for insomnia, for instance, you'd take a larger dose of kava than if you just wanted to calm yourself before a plane flight). Cass also covers herbs that can be used in combination with kava, including valerian, licorice, and Ginkgo biloba; suggested dietary changes to improve overall mood and health; possible side effects; and techniques for managing stress in the first place, so antianxiety treatments aren't as needed. For anyone who wants to know all about what they're putting into their body, this is a solid primer.
